Takayama is a city in the Hida Region of Gifu Prefecture. We actually went this way to see Shirakawa-go but since there are only 2 tours for the day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. We decided to see the city while waiting for our afternoon tour. We left our hotel early in the morning to catch our bus at the Nagoya Station. Nagoy to Takayama takes approximately 2-3 hours. It costs 2980. You can also take the train which costs around 5510 yen for the express and it will take 138 minutes or 3310 yen for the local train with 4 transfers and it takes 3 hours and 30 minutes.

We made reservations for the bus on the website http://www.highwaybus.jp It’s free to make reservations. You just show them your reservation and pay for it at the ticket office.

IMG_1223Finding the Bus Station from the subway can be a little bit tricky. They have instructions and maps like the one above. It was a good thing that we did not get lost and just got there with time to spare. I noticed that they have clear signs at the subway for the Bus Station on which way to go. There was also a seven-eleven nearby the waiting area for the bus so we bought drinks and snack for the trip.

IMG_1227Our bus was not full so we got to switch seats when the bus driver had picked up all passengers. The bus does include a toilet and it’s really nice. It’s wide and spacious, you can have a party in there. It’s located toward the back of the bus and takes the full width of the bus.

It was a really comfortable ride. The best part of the bus ride was seeing views of small towns covered in snow along the way.

IMG_1256They drop you off at the JR Station near the Tourist Information Center. The bus stop going back is also next to the station. You can’t miss it.
